Mitten im Zweiten Weltkrieg erhält der Geheimagent Max Vatan den Auftrag einen deutschen Botschafter zu ermorden. Ihm zu Seite wird die französische Untergrundkämpferin Marianne Beauséjour gestellt. Auf ihrer Mission entwickeln die beiden wahre Gefühle füreinander. Das verliebte Paar bekommt in Großbritannien ein Kind und die Ehe scheint perfekt. Bis zu dem Tag, an dem Max die Botschaft erhält, dass Marianne eine Doppelagentin ist und den Auftrag bekommt, sie zu töten.
