Die Eroberung des Wilden Westens ist als Legende überliefert, deren Helden fast durchweg weiße Männer sind. Dem Historiker William Loren Katz zufolge war jedoch nach dem Ende des Bürgerkriegs jeder vierte Cowboy im Westen der USA afroamerikanisch. Auch schwarze Sheriffs, Trapper, Soldaten und Frauen spielten Schlüsselrollen. Diesem lange ignorierten Kapitel Kulturgeschichte ging ein Filmteam auf die Spur.
