Inspektor Columbo untersucht den angeblichen Raubmord an einer Frau namens Janicce Caldwell. Dabei stößt der zerzauste Ermittler auf diverse Ungereimtheiten. Ist Hugh, der Ehemann des Opfers, für den Tod von Janice verantwortlich? Und welche Rolle spielt der hochrangige Polizist Mark Halperin in diesem Fall? Der Mann ist der Vorgesetzte von Columbo und außerdem ein guter Freund der Caldwells. Als dann auch die Ehefrau von Halperin tot aufgefunden wird, lässt sich die Intrige entwirren...
