Gold hat seinen Ursprung nicht auf der Erde. Es ist, wie andere Metalle auch, im All durch die Kollision von Sternen entstanden. Geologische Prozesse transportierten das Edelmetall über die Jahrmillionen in verschiedene Weltregionen. Ein Großteil liegt heute tief unter der Erde in Südafrika. In Amerika dagegen führten die oberirdische Ablagerungen im 19. Jahrhundert zum sogenannten Goldrausch.
