    Beschreibung

    Andy Sarafin (Bill Pullman) ist zwar nicht reich, hat aber keinen Grund zur Klage. Er liebt seinen Job als Vertrauenslehrer an der Universität. Gemeinsam mit seiner attraktiven Frau Tracy (Nicole Kidman) hat er gerade ein Traumhaus im viktorianischen Stil gekauft, das die beiden geschmackvoll renovieren. Mit einem gemeinsamen Kind wäre das Glück der beiden perfekt. Als Andys Studienkollege Jed Hill (Alec Baldwin), inzwischen ein gefeierter Starchirurg, eine Stelle an der Universitätsklinik annimmt, bietet Andy ihm gegen Tracys Willen ein Zimmer im leerstehenden Obergeschoss an. Entnervt von Jeds lautstarken nächtlichen Eskapaden, kommt es erstmals zu Spannungen zwischen dem Paar. Tracy, die seit geraumer Zeit über Unterleibsbeschwerden klagt, bricht zusammen und landet ausgerechnet auf dem Operationstisch von Jed. Der Chirurg entdeckt eine komplizierte innere Blutung und entschließt sich - in Rücksprache mit Andy - zu einer Totaloperation. Nach dem Eingriff stellt sich jedoch heraus, dass Tracy vollkommen gesund war. Tracy verklagt das Krankenhaus auf 20 Millionen Dollar Abfindung und verlässt ihren Mann, der die Zustimmung für die fatale Operation gab. Andy steht vor dem Scherbenhaufen seines Lebens. Allmählich wird dem gutmütigen Lehrer klar, dass er das Opfer einer von langer Hand eingefädelten, teuflischen Intrige ist.
