Selina Meyer nimmt das Amt als amerikanische Vizepräsidentin an. Bald muss die ehrgeizige Politikerin jedoch feststellen, dass ihr neues Amt kaum Befugnisse mit sich bringt. Sie ist abhängig vom Präsidenten und muss ständig auf seinen Anruf warten. Diese Machtlosigkeit bietet ihr umso mehr Gelegenheiten, in Fettnäpfchen zu treten, und ihr bürokratischer Alltag ist voller Stolpersteine.
